Paislee is six and a half months now, and we have started BLW. We are also continuing puree’s because we still have some that I made, but also because while we are learning about new foods, I want to make sure that P is still getting the full nutrients that she should be getting. Let’s be honest, right now when it comes to food the actual food that we give is eaten a little bit, and mostly thrown around.
Once I learned that the saying “food before one is just for fun” isn’t entirely true, I knew I wanted to do the best I could to give my girl nutrients while still letting her experience different textures and foods.
That’s when I decided that what’s going to be best for us is doing a mix of BLW and puree’s. I’m sure that as she get’s older and learns to eat more we will just naturally transition to mostly BLW, but for now the mix is what works for us and I’m sticking with it.
One of the biggest things I’ve learned since becoming a mom is that there are a million ways you are supposed to do things. There are certain ways you are supposed to approach feeding, sleeping, and everything else. So, I have made the executive decision (and my husband is on board) to approach feeding in a way that works for us.
That being said, this might not work best for you, and that’s 100% okay. Read blogs, do your research, and figure out the needs of your family, and do what you need to do for you!
Okay, let’s dive in.
Let’s start off by sharing our daily eating schedule, with some of our favorite meals that we eat!
Breakfast
We love breakfast around here, and I love giving P fun things to try for breakfast! We almost always try to include a fruit in there, and some sort of dairy, and carbs. Because, we love carbs around here! Usually I start off with a puree to make sure she eats, and then I give her some actual food to munch on while I am eating breakfast. Here’s some breakfast ideas:
+ Mango puree + oatmeal and toast (cut into finger length strips
+ waffles (cut into finger length strips) with peanut butter, and mashed banana.
+ mashed avocado and toast
+ pancakes and greek yogurt with strawberries
Lunch/Snack
Lunch for some reason is a little bit harder, especially because with our nap schedule because a lot of times we sleep through actual lunch time. So we do more snacks for now, and will transition into more lunch foods as she drops a nap and has longer wake windows. Here’s some snacks:
+ teething crackers
+ yogurt bites
+ puffs
+ cheese
+ avocados
Dinner
We usually just give her some of whatever we are eating for dinner, or a simpler version of it, along with some puree’s.
Some of our favorite solids:
+ quesadilla
+ pasta
+ chicken
+ steamed veggies
+ potatoes
+ chicken nuggets (there’s a kind with veggies mixed in, it’s definitely a win!)
+ beans
+ rice
Some puree’s
+ peas
+ broccoli
+ carrots
+ sweet potatoes
+ apple’s
+ prunes (perfect for keeping regular)
If you are just starting out foods, or wanting more inspo on puree’s I found this YouTube video from one of my favorite YouTuber’s Delilah Leoppkey very helpful!
Starting Solids? Here’s some Must Have’s.
- Okay first off, whether you are going to be doing BLW or puree’s get a high chair that is easy to clean. I know the fabric one’s are cute, but eating is messy. Here’s some suggestions:
+ The High Chair We Have (and love!): The Ingenuity SmartClean Trio Elite 3-in-1 High Chair
+ Budget Friendly Fav: Ikea Antilop High Chair With Tray
2. Next, some cups. Once your baby starts solids, they can start drinking a couple of ounces of water. I went with some no spill straw cups that P still doesn’t know how to use, but she’s getting close! Here’s the link.
3. I highly recommend getting some utensils that your baby can practice with, as well as some that you can use to feed puree’s if you are going that route.
+here’s the utensils that she uses to practice with
+here’s the spoons I use to feed her puree’s
4. If you’re making puree’s, here are some of my must-haves:
+ a good blender, we have a vitamix and we LOVE it-
5. If you’re doing BLW, here’s some great resources:
+ BLW app
6. Lastly, have some children’s Benadryl on hand. Paislee had a reaction to eggs. I was able to call the doctor for proper dosing, and once she had some, her puffy face and hives went away. I will never not have it on hand.
There you have it! So far, our feeding journey has been fun, scary, and perfect for us. I hope you found this post helpful! Let me know if you have any other must have’s for starting solids!
