How To Do an at home photoshoot with your baby With things around your house

If you look at Pinterest, you can see so much inspo for baby photos.

A lot of them are professionally taken, and rightfully so, they look amazing. But they cost a fortune, and I don’t have the money in the budget to spend hundreds of dollars on photos, or even the time to get my baby ready and drive to a location hoping that no spit up or blow outs happen on our way.

So, I wanted to give it a shot on my own and see if I could try my hand at some professional-looking photos.

It was the perfect time too, because recently my baby girl turned 6 months old, and I wanted to do a fun little photoshoot with her that truly captured her personality.

No joke, they turned out SO SO SO SO cute. Like seriously, I’m actually obsessed with these photos, and will definitely be printing some out to put on our wall.

The best part, I think it cost me in total $9. And that was because I had my husband pick up some flowers. Here’s exactly how I did it!

A quick note, I do have a Canon M50 that I used for these photos, since that’s what I use to vlog, as well as my ring light to make sure that the lighting was even. But you can definitely use your phone and I’ll explain how to get good lighting without the use of a ring light! I do however love having a good camera to capture memories of our family, and a ring light for good lighting. I will link them below in case you do want to grab these things!

Step One: The Set Up

here is a photo from my IG story of the set up

I put my baby down for her first nap, and then the work began. Like I mentioned above, I had my husband bring home some flowers the night before so I had them all prepped and ready.

I set up the pack n play right in front out our wall of windows to try to get the best lighting. Because of the time of day, I did end up using my ring light just to even out some of the light.

I then used 6 white pillow cases that we had laying around the house. The first two bigger ones, I hung off the back of the pack n play. Then, I took her play mat and placed the other four on top of it so that I had a nice white background.

I then took a small jar( I had previously spray painted it a rusty orange to match her headband she would be wearing) and filled it with some baby’s breath flowers, and placed it on a wooden cake stand. I took her favorite books right now and placed them on the cake stand as well. On top of the books, I put a letter board on it.

Then, I put flowers and some neutral wooden toys on her mat, and called it good!

here’s what it looks like zoomed in and cropped how the photos will be!

Step Two: The Photos

Now taking the actual photos was what I was most concerned about. Honestly, right before I put her down for photos she was screaming. I didn’t think the photos would turn out so good!

But, once she saw the flowers and some of her toys, she was perfectly fine. She honestly had a blast! I just let her go and explore, and captured her true and honest reactions to her toys and the flowers. It was seriously so fun and sweet to just let her be her. No pressure, no trying to coax her to smile, just capturing her pure, honest self.

I ended up taking 96 photos in about 4 minutes…so I definitely had a lot of content to go through!

Step Three: Editing

Now this is the part where a lot of people make the decision to hire out a photographer. But, I encourage you to take the time to learn simple edits, because it will save you sooo much money as a parent to be able to photograph your kids.

Also, it has never been easier to edit photos on your own because of Lightroom presets. Simply go on Etsy, find a vibe that you like, and purchase a preset for around $5. In Lightroom, you can click on the preset and adjust simple things like the contrast and exposure to get the photo to look exactly the way you want it. Plus, you can follow accounts like @jaci for some basic editing tips. You got this, mama!

Here’s some of my favorite presets on Etsy by vibe:

Here are my favorite presets that I have purchased that are definitely more than $5, but well worth the money-

  • Abigail Green Presets– I used these on Instagram for a while! I like the more natural look, but these are so beautiful and you should see Abigail’s IG for proof of how beautiful these are.
  • Jenna Kutcher Presets-These are what I am currently using, and used to edit these photos. I love the natural look of them, and all of my photos have turned out stunning.

The Final Result

Here’s just a few of the images that I captured, that truly resemble this girl’s personality.

And that’s it! I know it seems like a lot, but honestly I had a blast photographing my girl and working on my photo skills! And…saving a good amount of money. Do you take your own kids photos? What tips and tricks do you have?
